D from Southampton N.Y. asks...
The word in question is "served"? Is it correct to say "First come first served basis" or "First come first serve basis"?
Anne answers...
I searched my various resources for an authoratative comment on your question. Failing a really good answer, however, I resort to the following:

'First come, first served' is more correct because the phrase is shorthand for 'The first people who come will be the first to be served.' Hence, 'first come, first served.'
