George from PA asks...
How can i explain the grammartical use of ampersand & through to a college writing class and how can i incorporate the ampersand in a quiz?
Anne answers...
Start with the dictionary definition for the ampersand. It's very simple. The ampersand is a symbol for the word "and", used primarily to shorten company names, such as Smith & Jones. It can also be used in addresses, such as Mr. & Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. It is rarely used in sentences. As for creating a question for a quiz, how about: What symbol replaces the word "and" in company names and addresses?
